Reflective analysis

The main focus of my 25 shot storyboard is cinematography. This is why I have included as much information as I can when I have spoken about the cinematography techniques used. As you can see from the picture below I have included the majority of my information in that box.
Because I was focusing mainly on cinematography I made sure I used a range of different types of shots so that I could express meaning through these different types of shots.
Shots that I have used to create the meaning within the story board include Close ups, I have used several close ups and mid close ups in order to show the emotion on the protagonists faces.  This is because when Joe is singing it is important to show that he really is singing and that he is singing what he means so he shows the emotion on his face, the close ups are also important when Beth is on screen as it’s important to show what Beth’s emotions are at that time.
I used mid shots in order to show the two characters in the shot together, this way you can still see the emotion that they are putting in and you can fit both of the characters into the shot so that the scene looks together more rather than individual images of each character.
I used long shots in order to show the two characters and the setting as when the two characters are in the shot together and they have moved to a different location E.g. to the climbing frame, the long shot allows me to show the two characters and the new setting that they have moved to.
I also used other stylistics such as Mise en scene, Editing and Sound, I used mise en scene as I chose the setting of the location, I chose what props would be in the shot when E.g. Guitar. I also used editing as I chose how the shot would change and when it would change, E.g. if a shot cuts away or whether it fades out. I also used sound massively as my genre is musical so it was important for me to mention that there was the song playing in the background and when the song wasn’t playing if there was any dialogue or any other sounds that could be playing at that time.

When I asked audience for response I got many ways in which they found the storyboard very good however I also got some criticisms on how I could improve it. Some of the feedback I got about my product which was positive includes; “The shots are very good, you can tell that cinematography was your chosen stylistic”, this was very positive feedback as it showed that the area of my focus was what this person enjoyed the most about my storyboard and this is great news. Another piece of positive feedback I got was “The information that you have included for each area is very good and I really like the whole product, you can tell you’ve worked hard”, again this was very positive as this means that this person appreciates all the information and that they can put the shot together in their head from the information that I have given them. A negative piece of feedback that I got was that somebody said “The mise en scene is a bit random, why would they go on a kids park when they are playing on it.” This isn’t good feedback and if I had the chance to go back and change my location I would try and find somewhere that would be a bit cooler and would be somewhere that the coolest kid of a school would go and meet his friends, however in my past experience before you get to the age of 17,18 it’s hard to find places to go as you can’t drive and you can’t meet at a pub therefore I tried to go along with the fact that they’re meant to be 16 and therefore this would be the only place that they could meet as this is the only real place that they have to go because of their age restrictions. Altogether my feedback was very good, even the negatives as this let me know what I could do better if I were to do it again and that will make me improve therefore all the feedback I received was very beneficial and helpful to myself.

The storyboard type I will be using

This is the storyboard I will be using and as you can see it shows the shot number in the top left hand corner, It has a box to draw the image in, a box for a shot description for what will be happening in that shot and along the bottom it has boxes for the Cinematography, Editing and Sound that is used.

Synopsis (2nd Draft)

Joseph Myers, 16, is the most popular kid at Wyke High school with a reputation of being a bit of a bad egg in a town called Hessle and when Ellie Valentine, 16, grade A student from Chelsea moves into town and enrols at the same school as Joseph, from then on all Joseph wants is her attention. Unlike Joseph, Ellie isn’t very popular as she is more inclined to be a part of the Math team and show choir rather than part of the schools renowned Cheerleading squad and sports teams.  Joseph who is the schools championship winning Football teams captain doesn’t care as he would throw that all away just to get her to like him.  Ellie just thinks that Joseph is like all the other big shot boys at every school, Joseph looks to change  Ellie’s view by joining the schools show choir to show that he doesn’t care what people think as long as he gets the girl he loves. There are Grammy nominated songs throughout the whole of the film including a cover of Neil Diamond’s hit song ‘Sweet Caroline’ to show the emotion that is being portrayed including the moment in which Joseph serenades Ellie in the park where Joseph and his friends hang out, he leaves his friends and dances round the park whilst singing to Ellie so she knows what she really means to him. The two start dating however this could all come to an end when Joseph has to make a decision between the National Football championship final and the National Show Choir championship and with it being his senior year he wants to leave a lasting impression on the school by winning both. His relationship with Ellie and his friends hangs in the balance, as he tries to figure out a solution so he can attend both, but will he manage to pull it off?

Narrative/Story type

I will be following 'Svetzan Todorovs' narrative theory and the story line will be 'The Romance' as the narrative is featured around Joseph getting Ellie's attention which ultimately ends up in them dating and then there is something that could ruin the relationship therefore it is all based around the relationship of Joseph and Ellie and about their romance which makes my story type 'The Romance'.

My Chosen Sequence

My chosen sequence is from about two thirds of the way through the film and this is when Joseph and Ellie have their first romantic moment in the park when Joseph serenades Ellie were the audience think that the two of them could possibly be getting together as all the other time Ellie had been pushing him away as she thought he was just another typical High school Jerk, so this is the first time that she feels something for him. It also is the point of the film in which Joseph's life really starts to look the best it can be as he's the captain of the football team, lead vocalist along with Ellie in the show choir and he almost has his girl. This is the moment in which everything changes in their emotions so therefore it is a very important sequence so that is why I have chosen to do this sequence

Genre Choice

Key Iconography

  • Characters would spontaneously burst into song and dance as if it was natural and like it was them speaking.
  • Usually a boy loves girl/girl loves boy situation were something goes wrong which leads to sad song
  • Big ending were everything is resolved and everyone joins in as a big song explodes.
  • Usually set in small towns or villages
  • Often have a large cast however the story is primarily focused on two people
  • The songs are sang in order to express the characters emotion
  • The characters are usually younger characters that are very upbeat

http://youtu.be/-LepPGcEnDw

The above trailer shows the film trailer for the musical, High school musical 3 within this trailer you can see many uses of the iconography above as it shows the characters dancing, having fun and enjoying themselves and you also see some struggling there and they use singing as a way to get out of that struggle. You can also hear one of the songs over the top which again reinforces the fact that this is a musical and that is what it's about. We also get a bit of a look at the narrative as well so that we know that it's not just going to be a sing-song and that there will actually be some meaning for it and it will be there for a reason as it will fit in with the narrative.
